Egg shells are made of calcium carbonate. When nitric acid is added, calcium carbonate reacts with nitric acid to form calcium nitrate, carbon dioxide and water. CaCO3 (s) + 2HNO3 (aq) -----> Ca(NO3)2 (aq) + CO2 (g) + H2O (l)

When we add Nitric acid to calcium carbonate, the following reaction occurs-

HNO3 + CaCO3 => H2O + CO2 + CaNO3

I.e calcium nitrate is formed with liberation of carbon dioxide gas.
