So if the USB device is not in active use (middle of file transfer, process running from USB etc) it's safe to remove in any way. ... Ejecting the USB drive 'safely' sends the operating system signal to finish writing data in write cache to USB drive, thus ensuring the data transferred hasn't been corrupt.
