In this poem Dreams Deferred by the literary genius Langston Hughes, the poet is talking about the dismal condition of African Americans in Harlem.
When they first came to Harlem, New York in the early 1900’s, there were dreams that they thought would be fulfilled.
But these dreams remained just that; dreams which have been replaced with exploitation and poverty. This is what the poet refers to when he uses the word, “Deferred”; Dreams.
