The government made sure that there is enough food for everyone so they especially designed the food security programme in order to help the poor. The two programmes which the Government introduced are the following:
- Antyodaya Anna Yojana: This programme was launched in 2000 around December, the basic idea was to feed the people who belonged to the poverty level. Under this scheme over 1 crore people who were among below the poverty line were fed. The food which was made available to these family would cost around Rs.2 per kg for wheat and Rs. 3 per kg for rice. This scheme worked really well and the quantity of food provided to the families was enhanced by 25 kg to 35 kg and by the end of 2004 over 2 crore families were covered.
- National Food for Work Programme: This was launched in 2004, 2 years later than the other scheme this covered around 150 most laid back towns of the country and anyone who had the desire to get involved in unskilled work could avail this programme. This scheme provided the food grains free of cost and the whole cost was handled by the state and for monitoring, planning, implementation, and supervision the district collector was entrusted.
