Science is a broad subject and there have been many achievements in the various fields of science in India since the ancient times.

The first glimpse of development and major achievement was the formation of the Indus valley civilization. Until the 16th century, Indian science was going on par with the European sciences. The British then occupied the Indian cities and used the resources to improve their technology using Indian science. Gradually, the Indian science was left behind with the European technology taking over.

However, after Independence, there was major growth in the science and technology, transport, connectivity, space research and sciences especially the work by BARC, nuclear sciences, pharmaceutical research, etc. As the saying goes, 'Necessity is the mother of invention', gradual development took place in various fields of science with the increasing demand and need.
