- Descartes considered the body and the soul to be ontologically separate but interacting entities, each with its own particular attributes. He then sought to specify both their mode and site of interaction; the latter he deduced to be the pineal gland.
- Descartes attributes soul only to humans, not all animals. ... Whatever the case, we know that Descartes believed only humans had souls because (a) he believed that the pineal gland was the seat of the soul and (b) he (wrongly) believed that humans were the only animals with pineal glands.
