Both worms and microorganisms help the soil to make fertile.  

When they actually deposit the castings, then their mucous is completely deposited into soil.

It helps for slowing the releasing of essential nutrients as well as prevents them from fully being washed away with first watering.  

The earthworm manure is richer in various minerals, so worms work for breaking down the organic matters.
