What I could do to assist my friend

it depends on what your friend is trying to do .. don't do anything immoral ..

If your friend is in some kind of stress then you could assist him/her by being there by their side and if they are not willing to share whatever's bothering them then do not pressurize them...give them their space....after a while they will automatically open up to you  so what you have to do is just to be there for them.
