EMF stands for electro motive force and it is the ratio of the total internal as well as external resistance where the internal resistance is the resistance provided by the source of engineering or potential difference...
the formula of EMF is i(R+r)
where r is internal resistance and R is external resistance of a resistor or appliance
the potential difference in other case is only the external resistance potential not the internal and hence formula iR ..
they have same unit that is volt...
