The experience of being held hostage left a deep impact on Tommy Caldwell. He could not mountain -climb for a long time. He however became more optimistic towards life.

EXPLANATION:

Tommy Caldwell had decided to climb the extremely difficult cliffs of Kyrgyzstan along with some fellow climbers. Up on the cliffs he and his friends were taken hostages by some terrorists. It was for them that Caldwell had to confront a battle and ultimately won freedom by shoving one of the terrorists off the steep cliff.

This led Caldwell totally shattered. He thought he had killed the man. It made him guilty and his conscience tormented him. The violence he had witnessed also greatly affected him. He could not return to normalcy for a long time.

The positive part was he became more strong and optimistic towards life. He became a more confident person and loved his life dearly.
