Flood protectionForest soils act as sponges and retain water longer than soils under other land uses. Tree and forest removal therefore increases water discharge and the risk of flooding in rainy seasons and the risk of drought in dry seasons. Reforestation and afforestation have the opposite effect on water quantity.
