What impact do you think

the age structure has

on inter - generational

relationships? For instance,

could a high dependency

ratio create conditions for

greater tension between

older and younger

generations? Or would it

make for closer

relationships and stronger

bonds between young

and old? Discuss this in

class and try to come up

with a list of possible

outcomes and the reasons

why they happen.

Answer:

The dependency ratio tells us how many young people (under 16) and older people (over 64) depend on people of working age (16 to 64). As the ratio increases there may be an increased burden on the productive part of the population to maintain the upbringing and pensions of the economically dependent.
