We can learn many good values from Franz. He was a very strong, self-disciplined, sincere, and patriotic boy. Though that morning he was late for school, we must not forget that he managed to reach his class on time.
As Franz went to school that day there were many temptations enticing him not to go to school that day. The first temptation was his lack of preparation for the test on participles. Apart from it, there were other temptations. It was very warm and bright. The birds were chirping at the edge of the woods; and in the open field back of the saw-mill the Prussian soldiers were drilling. It was all much more tempting than the rule for participles, but he had the strength to resist, and hurried off to school.
At school when he came to know about the sad news of M.Hamel leaving the school and new order from Berlin, he felt very sad and regretful. He wanted to learn everything from his teacher. He was very sorry for having taken learning French lightly.
