Gulliver was surprised and puzzled to see the methods employed by the people of Lagado in agriculture, architecture and other work of practical nature. He wished to know what caused these people to work so hard in the same manner despite the fruitlessness of the tasks. He eventually visited the Academy of Projectors which had undertaken these new methods for the "progress" of arts and sciences but he later found out that the perpetrators of these methods were not so visionary. Having seen it all at the Academy, he decided to leave Lagado since he felt, there was nothing truly remarkable left to see there.
