Jessie Allyn was beautiful, simple and elegant and intelligent and quite observant. Her simplicity and soft demeanour had a great effect on John Pescud.

Miss Allyn was a very pretty lady who had many virtues
such as modesty, alertness, feminine coyness that made her prettier. John fell
in love with her the moment he had seen her. She just minded her own business
but that does not mean she was not sensitive to people staring at her. She knew
from the very beginning that John was interested in her and was following her.
Following her when he reached Birchton, and bared his soul to her, she behaved very modestly and indirectly told him to talk to her father first. She suggested
to him that she might accept his proposal provided he talked to her father
first and sought his permission in the matter.
