Given equation- CaCO3 ( metal carbonate) + 2HCl ( acid ) -----> CaCl2 ( salt ) + H2O ( water) + CO2 ( carbon dioxide gas)
• This equation tells us that metal carbonates / bicarbonates react with acids to give corresponding salt, water and carbon dioxide gas.
• The presence of CO2 can be detected by passing the gas through a solution of lime water Ca(OH )2 . If the solution turns milky then evolved gas is carbon dioxide.
