The mass number of Mg is 24 means that it has total of 24 neutrons and protons in its nucleas. (Out of which 12 are protons)

The atomic number of Mg is 12 means that it has 12 protons in its nucleas and 12 electrons revolving around it in orbitals as the number of protons is equal to the number of electrons
