He told the prisoner to row to an island which was very near to the coast. He also told that he could take help of the Korean fishing boat to escape from the island. He gave him a torch so that he can give signal to Sadao if the hoarded food finishes. However, he told him not to signal in dark. He also instructed him not to light a fire as he would be easily discovered by the enemies then.
