A volcano is a vent or a narrow opening in the crust of the Earth connected to an underlying magma chamber by a conduit from which molten magma, zero rock fragments, gases, steam and ash come forth deep below the surface.

Constructive effects:
1) Weathering of igneous rocks forms fertile land soil
e.g. Deccan Plateau in India is Rich in black lava soil (regur). It is moisture retentive and very suitable for cotton and sugarcane cultivation.

2) Most of the precious stones and certain minerals are formed due to volcanic activities.
e.g. The diamond mine at Kimberly in South Africa is a result of volcanic activities in the geological past.

3) Volcanic regions have many hot springs and geysers. This mineral water is considered to be of great medical value. Some of the hot springs and geysers are used to trap geothermal energy.

4) Volcanic regions always attract tourists because of their scenic beauty.
e.g. Yellowstone National Park in U.S.A attracts tourists from all over the world.

Destructive effects:
1) Volcano caused heavy destruction of life and property. The fast moving hot lava can settle on roads and other man made structures. Large quantity of hot lava destroys the animal and plant life.

2) The cultivated areas get buried under thick layer of Ash and dust. Thus, the cultivable land becomes unsuitable for agricultural activities.

3) Explosion or eruption of volcanoes are followed by the formation of huge clouds which result in heavy rainfall which leads to landslides, floods etc.

4) Volcanic eruptions in oceanic islands are highly destructive because tsunami waves and large scale floods cause havoc destruction in the coastal areas. Large number of settlements and cultivated land get totally destroyed.

5) The explosive gives out many poisonous gases which leads to air pollution.

LAVA – Lava is the liquid rock (magma) that flows out of a volcano. Lava glows red hot to white hot as it flows.

ACTIVE VOLCANO – An active volcano is one that erupts regularly.

DORMANT VOLCANO – A dormant volcano is one that has not erupted for many years, although there is still some activity deep inside.

A fissure vent, also known as a volcanic fissure, eruption fissure or simply a fissure, is a linear volcanic vent through which lava erupts, usually without any explosive activity. The vent is often a few metres wide and may be many kilometres long. ... Fissure vents are often part of the structure of shield volcanoes.
