24-carat gold is pure gold. Pure gold is very soft and not suitable for making jewelry. Therefore, to increase its hardness, it is alloyed either with copper or silver. 22-carat gold is prepared by alloying 22 parts pure gold with 2 parts of either copper or silver.

24 carat gold has 100% pure gold

24 carat gold= 100% pure

1 carat gold = 100/24

22 carat gold = 100/24 × 22= 91.6 %

∴ 22 carat gold consists of 91.6 % pure gold.
