Balanced chemical equation:

A chemical reaction in which the number of atoms of molecules on reactant and product side are equal then it is called balanced chemical equation.

Eg., 2Mg+O2→2MgO

In the above reaction the mass of magnesium and oxygen is equal on both side therefore it is balanced chemical equation.

Why equations should be balanced:

As per law of conservation of mass it states that mass of matter is constant in a chemical reaction before and after. So it is important to have chemical equation balanced.

The chemical equation needs to be balanced so that it follows the law of conservation of mass. A balanced chemical equation occurs when the number of the different atoms of elements in the reactants side is equal to that of the products side. Balancing chemical equations is a process of trial and error.
