Each chemical compound is known by a specific name. Writing the full name of a compound repeatedly is time consuming. Therefore, in chemistry each substance is denoted by its chemical formula.

There are two types of chemical formulae :-

  • Molecular formula
  • Empirical formula

A shorthand notation of a molecule in terms of symbols and the number of atoms of each element present in it is called molecular formula.

  • For example:- The molecular formula of water is H20. Thus, one molecule of water contains two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.

Empirical formula of a substance is the simplest formula which gives the lowest whole number ratio between the number of atoms of different elements present in the substance.
