Diaphragm is muscular and membranous structure (dome shaped) which is located right below the lungs. As the diaphragm contracts, it increases the length and diameter of the chest cavity and thus expands the lungs. This reduces the pressure outside the lungs. When the diaphragm relaxesa and moves back up the elasticity of the lungs and chest wall pushes air out of the lungs.
