Disaster :- Disaster is either a natural and man made calamity which brings misfortune and miseries to humanity. The term 'DISASTER' has been taken from the French world desastre in which 'des' means bad and 'astre' means star or u can say evil star.

A disaster, whether natural or human-induced, is an event which vesults in widespread human loss. It is accompanied by loss of livelihood and property, causing suffering and loss in a particular area.
Some common features seen in areas affected by disaster:
(a) Disruption in the normal functioning of society, thereby affecting a large number of people.
(b) Large-scale loss of life, property and livelihood, thereby affecting the community.
(c) A big blow to the economy of the country.
✯When does a hazard lead to a disaster:
A disaster occurs when the impact of a hazard on a section of society is such that the people are unable to cope with the event, causing death, injury, loss of property and economic loss. For example, if an earthquake hits a desert devoid of human habitation is not called a disaster, but if it strikes an area where a large number people reside, it is a disaster.
✯Types of disasters:
Disasters can be classified into various types based on their speed and origin/cause, as follows:
1. Based on speed: Based on speed a disaster can be termed as slow or rapid.
2. Based on cause: Based on cause, a disaster can be natural- or man-made.

Are of two types:
(a) Slow onset disaster: A disaster that prevails for many days, months or even years like drought, environmental degradation, pest infestation and famine.
(b) Rapid onset disaster: A disaster that occurs suddenly. The impact may be short or long. Earthquake, cyclone, flash flood, etc., are examples of rapid onset disaster.

Are of two types:
(a) Natural disaster: A natural disaster is caused by a natural hazard and leads to human, material, economic and environmental losses. Some examples of natural disasters are the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the 2008 Earthquake in China and the 2007 cyclone in Myanmar.
(b) Man-made disaster: It refers to a serious disruption of normal life triggered by a man-made hazard causing human, material, economic and environmental losses. Some examples are the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the 1999 Uphar cinema fire in Delhi and the Rajdhani Express Train derailment in 2002.
