Food chain is a series of a organisms which depend on the other for food.
The basic relationship is transfer of energy takes place in it.All food chains start with plant because plants are only capable of obtaining energy directly from sun which is further transported to other organisms.

A food chain has limited number of tropic levels because according to 10% law, only 10% of energy is transported to furher tropic level but as we move to 3-4 levels the energy goes on decreasing and a times comes when there is no energy available to the next tropic level so a food chain has only 3-4 tropic levels.
