A fuse or a fuse wire is a special wire made of a material with a low melting point, hence when a high current is passed through it, in the event of harmful power surges, which may damage the electrical appliances, the current causes the wire to heat up, and due to it's low melting point the wire melts and thus breaking the circuit. Hence the circuit is now open and no current is able to pass which protects the electronic items.

Nowadays we use MCB or Magnetic Circuit Breakers which are more efficient than fuse wires because after melting fuses needed to be replaced, but MCBs just need to flipped back again.
