Kwashiorkor, also known as “edematous malnutrition” because of its association with edema(fluid retention), is a nutritional disorder most often seen in regions experiencing famine. It is a form of malnutrition caused by a lack of protein in the diet. People who have kwashiorkor typically have an extremely emaciated appearance in all body parts except their ankles, feet, and belly, which swell with fluid.

• Kwashiorkor is a severe protein - deficiency disease which usually affects young children. It is caused when mother stops breast feeding their babied at an early age itself. As we know mother's milk is rich in proteins, it is very important in the baby diet.
• It effects children from 1-5 years of age, Oedema of legs and face takes place and no degeneration of muscles.

SYMPTOMS OF KWASHIORKOR :-

1. Underweight.
2. Stunted growth.
3. Loss of appetite.
4. Skin gets dark and scaly.
