what is a magnetic compass? how does it work?

A magnetic compass is an instrument that helps to indicate the direction ( north - south).
We know that a compass consists of a magnetic, needle which is pivoted at the centre of a small round box. These needle moves freely about the pivot. the needle of the compass indicate the north - south direction with the help of magnetic properties of the needle.
