Consider three numbers $a$, $b$ and $c$, which are in continued proportion (a:b::b:c). In this situation, $b$ is called the geometric mean or mean proportion between $a$ and $c$. 

TO FIND THE MEAN PROPORTION BETWEEN 6 AND 24
Let $x$ be the mean proportion between 6 and 24. 
Now, 
$6:x::x:24$
We know that Product of Means = Product of Extremes
⇒ $x*x = 6*24$
⇒ $x^{2} = 144$
⇒ $\sqrt{x^{2}} = \sqrt{144}$  [Square rooting both sides. ]
⇒ $x = 12$
∴ 12 is the mean proportion between 6 and 24.
