A media player is a computer program for playing multimedia files like videos, movies and music. Media players commonly display standard media control icons known from physical devices such as tape recorders and CD players, such as play, pause, fastforward, backforward, and stop buttons.

Hi friend!

I would be using simple language to explain the term so that you understand it the best :)

What do you understand from the word "media"? It is anh type of file containing an audio or video.
Now what do you understand by the term "player"? It is basically a platform or a environment to play or run anything.

Now combining the above meanings,
A media player is a platform/environment/application which is capable of playing any type of audio, video, etc. The media player used to play audio is known as audio player. The media player used to play video is called video player.

Hope it helps!
