chandy5: mitochondri is also known as the power house a cell. it produces energy in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate). each mitochondri is bounded by a double membrane envelope. outer membrane is porous. the inner membrane is thrown into folds and therefore have an area several times the surface area of the outer membrane. these folds are called cristae. mitochondria are absent in bacteria and the RBCs (red blood cells) of mammals.
