What is a northern light ? How is it formed?

Northern Light :
The lights are seen around the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. Auroras that occur in the northern hemisphere are called 'Aurora Borealis' or 'northern lights' 

Formation :
The aurora borealis (northern lights) form when charged particles emitted from the sun during a solar flare penetrate the earth's magnetic shield and collide with atoms and molecules in our atmosphere.
