Photosynthesis:
It is a physico-chemical process by which green plants fix the atmospheric carbon dioxide in the presence of sunlight and water and there by, synthesize the required food material (stored in the form of starch). Oxygen and water are the by products obtained in this process.
6CO₂ + 12H₂O ----(in the presence of light--->> C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6H₂O + 6O₂
Significance:
1.Photosynthesis is the primary source of all food on earth.
2.It is also responsible for the release of oxygen into the atmosphere.

Photosynthesis is the process through which plants make food. Photo means light, and synthesis means joining together.
Hope it helped. The other answer is really detailed and good, but this was the best I could do.
