Refractive index is a measure of how much the speed changes of the ray of light when it passes from one medium to another medium obliquely.

Hi there!

The Extent of the change in direction that takes place in a given pair of media is expressed in terms of the Refractive Index.

1 μ 2 represent Refractive Index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1, when light is going from medium 1 to medium 2.

1 μ 2 = μ 2/ μ 1 = sin i/sin r

Cheers!
