A resource is a thing in the environment that can be used to satisfy human needs . It is provided that it should be technologically accessible, economically feasible and culturally acceptable.
The resource is classified in following ways:
1) On the basis of origin --
a) Biotic - Those resources obtained from the environment and have life.
Example -- Human beings, flora,fauna
b) Abiotic - Resources that don't have life and are composed of non living entity.
Example -- Metals,rocks.
2) On the basis of exhaustibility --
a) Renewable - The resources that can be reproduced over a short period of time by physical, chemical and mechanical processes.
Example -- Water,Wildife.
b) Non-Renewable - Those resources that cannot be replenished within short time and take a long geological process to form.
Example -- Fossil fuels
3) On the basis of ownership--
a) Individual - Resources owned privately by individuals.
Example-- Wells, land property.
b) Community - Resources that are accessible to all members of a community.
Example -- Parks, playgrounds.

D) International - Some resources are owned by international institutions.
Example -- All the resources of ocean beyond 200 nautical miles.
On the basis of status of development -
a) Potential - Resources that have been identified and have possibilities of being extracted but are not currently utilised.
Example -- Harnessing of solar energy in Rajasthan
b) Developed - Resources that have been identified, and are being currently utilised.
Example - Iron ores at Bastar region.
c) Stock - These resources have been identified, and can be used currently but humans don't have that technology to access it.
Example -- Usage of hydrogen and oxygen as rich source of energy.
d) Reserves - Resources that have been identified , humans have appropriate
technology to extract and is also being currently in use.But are bring used in limited way to save it for future.
Example -- India is generating hydroelectricity but this extraction is limited for future use.
