A restrained smile is a half hearted smile. The person is smiling, but not very openly or willingly. The joy doesn’t seem to come from the heart. There seem to be mixed emotions, other than pure joy.

A person would smile in this manner for a number of reasons:

When a person does not want to smile, but is forced to, because of say peer pressure. When the situation involves irony. For instance, when someone who is fond of hurting others, gets hurt himself, the situation is not funny, but ironical. So, an onlooker would smile in a restrained manner. When the person who is smiling has an upper hand (knows something extra that the other person/people are not aware of). When a person is knowingly trying to mislead the others. A restrained smile suggests that he knows something important (as mentioned in the previous point), though it may not be true.

There are many other such situations in which a person would smile in a restrained manner.
