The scale is defined as the ratio of a distance on the map to the corresponding distance physically on the ground.

Maps have three components:

1. distance,

2. direction, and

3. symbol.

We measure distance in terms of scaleIt is considered as a ratio between the actual distance on the ground and the distance shown on the map.

Benefits  of scale: We can measure large areas like continents on a paper, by using a small scale map.

To show a small area like your village on paper, we use a large scale map.
