Sepal is a part of flower. Its functions are -
(1) Sepals form the outermost whorl of green leaf - like structures.
(2) They protect the inner parts of the flower during the bud stage.

sepals are the modified leaves that form the outer whorl of a flower and are the first part of the flower form. they develop at the top of stem and form the tightly closed area, often referred as a bud. sepals function to protect the developing flower to prevent from drying out.
