A heavy particle suspended by a weightless and inextensible string and oscillating freely without friction about a point, to which the upper end of the string is fixed, constitutes a simple pendulum.
The factors affecting the time period of a pendulum are:-
(i)Length of the pendulum: The time period varies directly with the square root fo the length of the simple pendulum. Effective length of a S.P. means the length between the point of suspension and the centre of the bob.
(ii)Acceleration due to gravity: The time period varies inversely with the square root of the acceleration due to gravity.
