What is a sonnet ? How can you say that 'sonnet 55' of Shakespeare has all the characteristics of an English sonnet ?

a sonnet is a short poem of 14 lines with a rhyming scheme of abab cdcd efef gg. it contains 3 four-lines stanzas called quatrains and a last couplet of two lines. shakespeare's sonnet 55 has all these features so it is a perfect english sonnet.
