What is a synapse? How does the nerve impulse across the chemical synapse?
Answers
NCERT based Answer for Class 11 Biology Students
Chemical synapse:
At a chemical synapse, the membranes of pre– and post–synaptic neurons are separated by a fluid filled space called synaptic cleft.
Axon terminals (synaptic knobs) contain vesicles filled with neurotransmitters.
When an impulse arrives at the axon terminal, it stimulates fusion of synaptic vesicles with plasma membrane and release of neurotransmitters (exocytosis) in the synaptic cleft.
The released neurotransmitters bind to their specific receptors, present on postsynaptic membrane.
This binding opens ion channels and generates action potential in post synaptic neuron.
Neurotransmitters may be excitatory or inhibitory in their action.
