The synaptic cleft is the small space in between synapses. When a message is propogated from the brain is travels along these synapses until it reaches the desired nerves in order to produce a response.

It is formed by the membranes of a pre-synaptic neuron and a post-synaptic neuron and may or may not be separated by synaptic cleft.
