What is a thermit reaction? State one use of this reaction.
Answer:
The reaction between iron(III) oxide (Fe203) and aluminium gives out lots of heat.
It is called the thermit reaction.
This displacement reaction is used to join railway tracks or cracked machine parts.
The heat given out in the reaction melts the iron formed. The molten iron runs down between the tracks and welds them together.

The reduction of metal oxide to form metal by using allumnium powder as a reducing agent is called thermit reaction . The reactions of metal oxides with alluminium powder to produce metals are highly exothermic in which a large amount of heat is evolved . In fact , the amount of heat evolved is so large that the metals are produced in molten state . This property of reduction by alluminium is made use of in thermite welding for joining the broken pieces of heavy iron objects like girders , railway tracks or cracked machine parts .
A thermite reaction is basically iron oxide (rust) reacting with aluminum to produce molten iron. The reaction is initiated by the heat from burning magnesium ribbon which is placed in the iron oxide/aluminum mixture, this is the fuse!
This works because the thermite mixture is aluminum powder and iron oxide (rust) powder. When the mixture is heated, it starts reacting: the aluminum is more reactive than the iron, so it "pinches" the oxygen from the iron to make aluminum oxide and iron.
A balanced equation for the reaction is:-
Fe O + 2Al --> Al O + 2Fe

What do I need to answer?? You hv written the question as well as the answer. Well the answer is correct.
The reaction is not given so I am providing u the equation :
Al + Fe2O3--------->Al2O3+2Fe.
