WAVE - A wave is the collective motion of many nearby particles (usually of the same type) that transmits energy. Hmm, that’s almost correct, but it allows picking up the steel beam and walking it over to the well — not a wave.
The trick is that a wave needs many nearby things (e.g., masses) interacting.
While a particle can be thrown from here to there, a wave is different. Usually, some substance already exists here and there. What moves is some energy (through the stuff). Energy may be from density, for example. For a compression wave, the steel bar already exists where the wave can travel. If part of the steel is hit (gets compressed), the compression moves down the steel (as a wave).
Well, I didn’t quite do what I set out to do. I feel as if I am like that judge who said, “I know pornography when I see it,” but he couldn’t define it.
This is my favorite saying of ignorance: “But you know what I mean.”
