It is the refractive index of the medium defined with respect to a vacuum. It is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the medium.

If the index is defined relative to another medium, the value for the refractive index is called a relative refractive index. If air is the other medium, the two indexes are very similar in numerical value.

Heya User,

Refractive Index --> is a number that defines how much the light will bend when shifting from a medium to another...

ABSOLUTE REFRACTIVE INDEX :->
:-> FORMULA :- c / v [ where v is the velocity of light in that particular medium ]
:-> Definition :- Abs. Ref. Ind. of a medium is defined as the comparative ratio of speed of light in vacuum to the speed of light in that particular medium which gives an idea of the bending of light within the medium.

For ex:-> Speed of light in glass = 3/4 c
=> Abs. Ref. Ind. of glass [ represented by mu :μ ] = c / [3/4c] = 4/3 = 1.33
