The acceleration due to gravity is the acceleration experienced by an object during free fall when in vacuum due to the gravitational force of the Earth.

The standard value of g is 9.8 m/s² on the surface of the earth.

We know that gravitational force F = GMm/ (r+h)²

Where F is the gravitational force,

G is the universal gravitational constant,

M is the mass of the earth,

m is the mass of the body,

h is the height of the object from the surface of the earth,

r is the radius of the earth.

AS h is very small in comparison to the radius (r) of the earth, therefore it can be ignored.

Now F becomes: F = GMm/ r²......(1)

We know that force acting on the body due to gravity is : F = mg.......(2)

Equating both the equations we get:

mg = GMm/r²

g = GM/r²
