  • An acid is a molecule or ion capable of donating a proton, or, alternatively, capable of forming a covalent bond with an electron pair.

  • A base is a substance that can accept a hydrogen ion (H+) from another substance. A chemical can accept a proton if it has a negative charge, or if the molecule has an electronegative atom like oxygen, nitrogen, or chlorine that is rich in electrons.

An acid–base reaction is a chemical reaction that occurs between an acid and a base. It can be used to determine pH.

An acid is a substance that donates protons (in the Brønsted-Lowry definition) or accepts a pair of valence electrons to form a bond (in the Lewis definition). A base is a substance that can accept protons or donate a pair of valence electrons to form a bond.
