Presence of acids like sulphuric acid and nitric acid in the atmosphere makes rainwater acidic. This rainfall falls on the earth as acid rain.
Some of the ill effects of acid rain are:
1). It can damage marble and cement structures. The Taj Mahal, in Agra, for example, is getting damaged by acid rain. That is why acid rain is also termed marble cancer.
2). Acid rain can damage crops and trees. It washes away minerals like magnesium and calcium present in the soil. As a result, crops are not able to get nutrients in proper amount.
3). Aluminium ions present in the soil are washed away by acid rain. If they reach lakes and rivers, they can kill wishes.
4). Acid rain falls on lakes, rivers, Ponds etc., and makes their water acidic.

Acid rain is a by-product of a variety of human activities that release oxides of sulphur and nitrogen in the atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels, coal, oil etc produces sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. They all pollute the air. These pollutants combine with oxygen present in the atmosphere. When it rains oxides of sulphur and nitrogen react with rain water and form acids. This is acid rain.

The ph value of acid rain is in between 5.0 to 5.5

Harmful effects of acid rain:
1. Acid rain damages the leaves of plants and trees.
2. It removes the basic nutrients such as calcium from the soil.
3. Acid rain damages buildings as it reacts with stone or metals.
