It is a form of connective tissue.

This is the most widely distributed connective tissue in the body. It consists of ground substance (matrix), white and yellow fibres and irregular cells scattered in the matrix. Fine threads run through the matrix, crossing each other in every direction, and leaving small spaces (areolae) between them. The tissue fills spaces inside organs and is found between skin and muscles, around blood vessels and nerves, and in the bone marrow. It supports internal organs and helps in the repair of tissues.
