What is air? You can't see it. You can't smell or taste it. But air is real. All living things need air. Although air is invisible, people can feel air brush against their skin when the wind blows on a windy day. Air also holds airplanes and kites above the ground, and it is used to inflate tyres and balloons. You can see that when you blow up a balloon, with each breath, the balloon gets bigger and bigger. Air is a mixture of different gases. Human beings and other animals take in oxygen present in the air and give out carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and use it to make food. Thus the balance of gases in the air is maintained. Oxygen present in the air is also essential for burning. In cities, the air gets polluted with harmful gases from factories and vehicles. This polluted air makes us fall ill. So plant more trees and keep the air fresh.

1) When you blow up a balloon, with each breath the balloon gets bigger and bigger. What can you understand from this statement?

A) Air is round in shape
B) Air takes up space.
